My goals in life are to have a well-run home, few money worries, well adjusted children, money socked away and whatever happiness I can scoop out of life.

FREE Multi-day Tickets to Disney for Military Families

It has finally happened. Or at least the first time since I can remember. Disney is now offering FREE multi-day tickets for your military family in a program they are calling "Disney's Armed Forces Salute". The Disneyland parks have a different deal than the Disneyworld Parks in Florida, so be sure to read below.

Here is Disney's Press Release:

Disney Parks Celebrate U.S. Military
With Free, Multi-day Admission to Theme Parks in 2009

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida / ANAHEIM, California (January 4, 2009) – As Disney Parks ask “What Will You Celebrate?” and invite guests to turn their personal milestones into magical family vacations in 2009, America’s military personnel will have one more reason to celebrate: Free multi-day admission to Disney’s U.S. theme parks.
With the “Disney’s Armed Forces Salute” offer, active and retired U.S. military personnel, including active members of the United States Coast Guard and activated members of the National Guard or Reservists, can enjoy complimentary, multi-day admission into Disney’s U.S. theme parks, great rates at select Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort hotels, and additional special ticket offers for family members and friends.
“For so many of the men and women who serve in our U.S. military, time together with their families is cause enough for celebration,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “We are grateful for their service and hope ‘Disney’s Armed Forces Salute’ will allow our troops to create wonderful, magical memories with their family and friends.”

At Disneyland Resort in Southern California:
Through June 12, 2009, each active or retired member of the U.S. military can receive one complimentary three-day “Disney’s Armed Forces Salute” ticket valid for admission to both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks. During the offer period, active or retired U.S. military personnel also may make a one-time purchase of an adult or child three-day “Disney’s Armed Forces Salute Companion” ticket for up to five family members (including spouse) or friends for the price of an adult 1-Day Park Hopper ticket.
Disneyland Resort hotels are also offering special room rates for active or retired military personnel. For example, at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, active or retired members of the military and their families may find hotel rooms starting at $119 per night during value season, with great savings during other times of the offer period. This offer is available through June 12, 2009, and the number of rooms available at these special rates is limited.
For information regarding “Disney’s Armed Forces Salute” at the Disneyland Resort, or to make reservations, military personnel may call 714/956-6424.

At the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida:
From January 4 to December 23, 2009, each active or retired member of the U.S. military may obtain one complimentary five-day "Disney's Armed Forces Salute" ticket with Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options. This ticket is valid for five days of admission into the four Walt Disney World theme parks, plus a total of five visits to a choice of a Disney water park, DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park or certain other attractions. During this offer period, active or retired U.S. military personnel may also make a one-time purchase of up to a maximum of five, five-Day "Disney's Armed Forces Salute Companion" tickets for $99 per ticket, plus tax, for family members (including spouse) or friends. Although this ticket for family members and friends does not include either the Park Hopper or Water Park Fun & More options, this ticket can be upgraded to add either such option, or both, for an additional $25, plus tax, per option. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by Dec. 23, 2009.

"Disney's Armed Forces Salute Companion" tickets may be used only by the friends and family members for whom they are purchased.
· This offer may not be combined with any other offer.

What Will You Celebrate?
Military personnel taking advantage of this offer will find even more to celebrate during their stay. Beginning in January, Disney Parks will embrace a newly identified nationwide travel trend called “celebration vacations,” in which Americans mark special occasions in their lives with a family vacation.
In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts ask guests “What Will Your Celebrate?” and lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones –a birthday, an anniversary, Quinceañera or any special occasion – into magical Disney experiences.

More Free Welcome Home Banners!

Build a Sign is at it again! They are giving away 20,000 free banners...and now they have jumbo cards as well. Get them while they're free. The last time I talked about this site, I got some emails from some very happy customers. Back then, they did not have the option to ship to an APO address on their site...now I see they do.

Considering how much large printed signs typically cost, even with the $22 shipping overseas, I think it would still be worth it. Or, here's another idea. We put the name of our unit, the unit crest and Family Readiness Group on the sign. Now we have a sign for our next fundraising event. We always seem to get more business when we have a sign...so here it is.

Or, how about making a welcome home banner with just the name of your unit or section on it? That way, you can use it again and again if there are more deployments in your future. You can also add grommets to your sign, for about $10, thru their site as well. Check them out, and see all the different ideas you can come up with. Just be prepared for slow shipping if you choose the cheaper shipping option (such as 10 weeks for us overseas), but if your event or party is not in the near future...go for it!

Check it out at BuildaSign.com.

Free Welcome Home Banner for Soldiers!

Happy 4th of July everyone! Well, here I am, still sitting in the hotel in Germany. We will hopefully be able to move into housing on Monday. I haven't had too much computer time but still promise to be back in August. I do have many adventures to share. I did have a company contact me, who is giving away 10,000 welcome home banners for the troops. They are also donating 15% of the proceeds to DAV. If your loved one is overseas, stop by their site and order a banner and be ready for the big day!

You can find the site below. I don't think there's a catch, but I do think when the free banners are gone, they'll be gone....so get one while you can and please spread the word to others.

Free Mother's Day Breakfast

I've heard that some McDonald's are offering a free "Mother's Day Breakfast" for moms if they come in and order inside and have a child with them. I'm not sure if it's all McDonalds or just local ones. Not sure what the free breakfast is either, but hey, if you've got nothing else going on in the AM on Sunday morning, drag your kid down to Mickey D's for a little treat!

McDonald's is also having a promotion and giving away their new Southern Style Chicken Biscuit and Sandwich with a drink purchase on 15 May. I'm not that big of a McDonald's fan, but what the hey...here it is

Like Coldplay? Free Download Now!

I hate to admit it...don't tell my kids. I love Coldplay, especially their song, Speed of Sound. Unfortunately, I'm too cheap to pay for music online just yet, so most times, I use this little method..yes, it's legal..to get free music. I also keep an eye out for artists who give music listeners like me a quick and free fix now and then. Here's one from Coldplay.

Coldplay's brand new album Viva la Vida has a great new single called Violet Hill. Download it here for only the next week...after that, pay up.

If anyone else knows of any good music out there that's free at the moment, please let us know!

FREEBIE on CD: Family Records Organizer

Moving around a lot with the military, we really need to have our records in order. Do you know where your marriage certificate is? Or your kids' shot records? More importantly, does your husband or anyone else in your family know where to look? Does your family know where to look for your personal and financial records should something happen to you or your husband? I've found a nifty little tool on CD, that is of course free, to help get all your paperwork stuff organized.

It's called the Family Records Organizer and is available FREE from T. Rowe Price. T. Rowe is a mutual funds company and prides itself on all its financial tools, calculators and literature. I've done business with them for years via their mutual funds (which are some of the best rated BTW), and can vouch for their customer service.

From their site:

Wouldn’t it make life simpler if your important financial information and accounts were organized in one safe place?

Most of us have what feels like dozens of financial accounts and records to keep track of, such as retirement plan accounts, bank accounts, investments, debts, mortgages, and more. Even for a simple estate there is a lot of information to manage. T. Rowe Price has developed a tool called the Family Records Organizer CD-ROM to help you with these organizational challenges. This unique, interactive CD-ROM provides you with an easy way to gather all your family's records in one safe place, including primary contacts.

The Family Records Organizer CD-ROM:
  • Offers a single place for you to capture important personal information about your investments, banking and credit cards, insurance, and more with the intent of passing this information along to your beneficiaries or keeping it in a safe place.

  • Features a comprehensive Learning Center containing helpful videos and topic information on each of the CD’s recordkeeping categories.

  • Captures the wide variety of information that is key to your and your family's financial well-being and organizes it so that anything you may need is available at a moment's notice.

  • Allows you to be paperless if you choose. You can save your information electronically or print it out.
Take the time to check it out! If you know of any other freebie goodies to share, please post them below!

Don't Forget About the Free USAA Wiping Out Debt Web Seminar

Just a reminder on this web seminar coming up at USAA. I don't know if they've had these in the past, but this is an online seminar led by a certified financial planner. You will get strategies to reduce debt and be able to ask some questions, so be sure to gather your thoughts and think of something that's really been bugging you or maybe something you don't totally understand. As an added bonus, they are offering ten chances to win a "sit down" with one of their financial planners, to get your own financial house in order. They say that's a $195 value. Be sure to register in advance, or you'll miss being able to participate. The seminar takes place, right here on 4 March at 7 PM Central Standard Time. You can arrive up to 15 minutes early. I just may see you all there!

Free Music Online...That's Perfectly Legal

I got a "trial by fire" so to speak when I got my Microsoft Zune for Christmas. I like to listen to a few podcasts...the financial gurus Dave Ramsey and Ric Edelman being my favorites. I guess my husband saw me wasting too much time on the computer listening in, so now I can get their latest talk shows and listen to them on my outings around town...very handy. And then when I saw the music...my hubby had uploaded all my favorite hits from the 80s and 90s! What a great feeling to listen to all that old stuff. Now my kids happen to get Zunes too from Santa. They, for the most part, don't like to listen to that "old lady stuff", so we looked at alternatives to get them their favorite songs. They have been diehard XM Radio Top 20 listeners for about 6 months now. It's funny to see the "almost tweenies" get into the latest songs and artists and such, mouthing the wrong words and keeping just a step behind the beat.

After dutifully downloading a few songs from the Zune Marketplace, as well as Amazon and a few other places...we started running out of allowances and chump change. So I put on my thinking cap. Remember in the very old days..at least for us....recording songs off the radio with your cassette player? I figured there had to be something just as nifty now. After a few days online, here are a few alternatives I have found...all are legal, and your conscience won't beat you up about it either.

  • Broadclip MediaCatcher. Let me say, I loved the idea. The software searches for you on hundreds of internet radio stations. You check back periodically to see what it found and then download the songs as MP3s to your computer. I say I loved the idea, because I had software issues and couldn't quite get it to work right.
  • Freecorder. This is a nifty little browser tool with record, stop, play, etc buttons at the top of your browser. You can go to one of the many sites that plays songs in streaming audio (I like Yahoo Music and CNet Downloads, which also has some free songs), hit "record", then "stop" when it's over. Freecorder will then prompt you for a song name and where you want to store it. You can customize some other options too. I have a folder I named "My Recordings" and made sure the Zune was able to find it.

Of course, when you record songs, you do have to fill in the Album, Artist and other info. The Zune automatically searches for album art and plugs that in. There are also some programs you can use to find album art and fix tags. I tried out Fixtunes . It fixes all your tags automatically, but gives you the chance to check them over first too. I had a few album covers that were just plain wrong. You can do 50 free with the shareware version, to buy, it's $24.95, but if you use coupon code 3eba623620, it drops the price to $9.95. It was a handy program, and it worked well for me. After a few hours, early one morning, I fixed all the old tags from my husband's music. It was funny to see him go to bed last night, scrolling through all the old album art from his heydey on his own little Sansa MP3 player.

I also tried out MP3 Tag, which is more labor intensive, but it allows you to search online databases to fix individual album art as well. I liked how it organized all the artist folders, so you could see what was in each one, without clicking on it. We had some songs stored in the wrong folders, which we would've never noticed otherwise. I guess that's my being uptight by things that aren't quite so orderly. Anyway, it's another program I recommend.

Do you have an MP3 player? When do you use it? Where do you get your music?

Free Personalized Menu and Fitness Plans

Normally, I like to stay away from processed foods. For the most part, they do have a lot of additives (ie junk that makes them smell and look good) and then they sock you with a higher price on top of that indignity. But, with that being said, you know I'm going to point out a silver lining here. I found a site that has been a big help in my menu planning, and now, they also have a daily fitness plan to get you moving and keep you on track.

I'm talking about Kraft Foods. I signed up for their seasonal magazine, which is full of recipes, menu and snack ideas, plus what's new at Kraft. The magazine comes in my mailbox five times a year. I rip out the pages of recipes I want to try, and dutifully keep track of these recipes like this. I know, I know...a few pages are marketing fluff, but for the most part, I've been pleasantly surprised.

One of Kraft Foods updated features, is their customizable Meal and Fitness Plan. You get recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and snacks depending on your level of caloric intake. You'll also get a blurb on what to do to burn some calories that day. Be sure to check it out and let me know how it works out for you.

What do you do to get menu ideas? How do you go about planning your menus? Do you have a fitness plan or something you like to do to stay active? Please do share your ideas.

Free Thrills Around Town

I know with the holiday season already started in full swing, the kids are already itching to go out and do some fun things. Many of use have already budgeted our money towards holiday gifts and may not have a lot left over for too much fun stuff. If you know where to look, you can always find something FREE to impress the kids and get the whole family into the spirit of the season.

Check these out:

  • Drive around and look at holiday lights; we like to get some mugs of hot chocolate and a CD of Christmas music, pack up the dog and drive around our town; some newspapers also print some of the more stellar lighted displays
  • Check your local churches; many have events for the public; our favorites are always the "walk through Bethlehem" tours, and many churches go all out with animals, costumes and elaborate displays
  • Don't forget to check your local Chamber of Commerce; they usually maintain a list of events around your city
  • Museums, zoos and botanical gardens typically have one day free; some do this once a week, month or even seasonally
  • Find a nearby "pick your own fruit" or Christmas tree farm; we've gone on hay rides, petted the animals, watched cane syrup production with a mule press and ridden ponies, had biscuits with gravy, all free at our local farm
  • Check your local military bases; they sometimes have public events, such as airshows or holiday shows
  • Libraries can also have events; ours doesn't do just story hour but also learning events, craft days, clowns and magicians; the holidays can be extra special
  • Chain book stores want you in the giving spirit...giving away your money that is...but if you can resist the temptation, these events can be fun too
  • It may be too cold for a picnic or bike ride, depending on where you live, but we've had some of our best family events, packing everyone up and heading out to our national and state parks for a nice hike; some parks also let you chop down your own Christmas tree with a permit; check their offices for more information
Do you have any ideas to share?

A Free Credit Check Four Times a Year

You've heard it a million times...check your credit report. It seems that for every big purchase or major life change, our credit is getting checked before we even make our first move. If it comes back less than stellar, we literally end up paying for it..and many times directly through our noses. I'm sure you've heard by now, how you can check your credit for free online. By law, you are entitled to do this once a year. Here's how you can do it at no cost to you, four times a year and some of the other steps you should be taking in the process.

Visit Annual Credit Report. Yes, you are going to fill in personal information, including your social security number. Yes, it is okay, and this is a secure site. You may be asked some identifying information. Once all that is entered, you will be asked to go to one of the three credit bureau agency sites. Pick only one credit bureau. You will then be whisked away to their site and see your credit report, minus your actual credit score. You don't think the credit reporting agencies would just comply with this law without giving them their freebie, do you? Their catch, is them trying to get you to fork over $8 to get you to ask for your credit score. This credit score kind of sums up your entire credit report. This is the number lenders and everyone else uses to check your credit. Unless you are about to make a big purchase, such as a car or home or about to rent an apartment, you do not need this score. So go ahead and bypass that, and just check the block for your credit report.

Go ahead and print out your report. I know, it's many pages, but you are going to quietly go through each page and circle any abnormal entries or something you are not familiar with. If you have no clue how to interpret or even read your report, visit "How to Read and Understand your Credit Report". Again, it is not really necessary to get all three credit bureau reports, unless you are about to hand over some big money. I know this article says to do it anyway, but these days, the credit bureaus do a better job of sharing information, so if it's going to be on one report, chances are, it'll be on the others too.

Obviously, if you have any errors, you are going to go about correcting them. Clean up your credit report. This is the part no one likes to do, but even small corrections could help your score tremendously, and I am all for a higher score. You should be too. If you want to really get into the shenanigans of how the agencies figure out your credit score, read How Credit Scores Work and My FICO - What's in Your Score. You can then get a good idea of what can negatively impact your credit report and score and go about fixing that...or at least changing things to be in your favor.

In four months, you are going to go right back to Annual Credit Report, and request a report from the next agency on the list...and again in four months for the last one. Repeat again next year. Make sure you also do this for your husband. I've also heard to check your kid's records, because you know there are folks out there who like to steal their identities most of all...because not many will notice. Believe it or not, most times, it's a relative who steals a child's information and not a stranger. Anyway, the credit bureaus ask that you request a child's credit report by mail. I tried accessing one of my children's records online, and since it didn't come up, I figured (and I hope rightly so), that there was no record to be found. If you still feel you need to contact the bureaus, you can do so through their snail mail addresses. You will have to provide proof you are the parent, such as a birth certificate and identifying information for you, such as a driver's license. Contact each credit bureau separately for more information.

What stories can you share about requesting your credit report? Any tips you'd like to share in improving your score and credit record?

Added 5/8/2008:

If you are a Georgia resident, instead of the one free credit check a year, your state law allows you to have two...now you can double the credit reports I mentioned above...if you like.

Read the Latest Bestsellers....For FREE!

You really can stay on top of all the latest bestsellers, and there's a way to do it where you don't pay a dime. The only thing needed is a bit of patience and due diligence and you're golden. Here's how.

  • Buy a small spiral notebook (you should always have one of these in your purse to begin with)
  • Browse the aisles and books and write down titles that interest you
  • Make sure you have a library card to your local library
  • Our library here in Florida makes it easy to access your account online and make book requests for the books you would like to put on hold
  • Our library does tell you what your spot is in the queue; with that being said, I have NEVER had to wait more than two months to get a book (for DVDs I have had to wait up to four months for the most popular titles)
  • Find out from your librarian how to do Interlibrary Loan (ILL); our library does not make it simple simon on their website; you have to know exactly where to go; we then get notified by email or phone (your choice) when our titles come in
Following these steps will really cut down on your spending, not to mention the clutter in your house! I still buy books now and then, but it's always a book I have already read, and it's one I plan to use again and again.

Here are some great books from our local library I have recently read:

  • Richistan - Pry into the lives of the super rich...find out how they got that way and what their day-to-day lives entail; it also gives an interesting peek into a butler school (yes, there is a shortage of household help these days)
  • Army Wives - the TV series "Army Wives" is based on this book; it provides a look into the life of a few Army wives at Ft Bragg; unfortunately, this book does dwell on all the negative aspects but it does provide a glimpse of what life can be like
  • Supper Swapping - The title sounds risque, but it's not; there are some nice and easy recipes in here; my next thought was that you'd have to have a pretty good friend to swap suppers with, but I liked the concept
  • The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me - this is a shockingly simple book riddled in common sense, but if you have no clue how to get on the road to riches but want something simple and easy to read (and want to bypass all the other books out there), then this is the book for you
  • Dixie Before Disney - I had always wondered what happened to all those roadside attractions of my youth; you'll find the ones from the South in this book; it's like walking down memory lane with a hint of sadness 'cause the book tells you what happened to those places after the boom; lots of photos; nice book
  • Air Travel Tales from the Flight Crew - a collection of tales, tips and gossip from a flight attendant; he gets vomited on, got food poisoning and gets hassled by angry passengers; the book isn't the most well written thing, but I did have to laugh at many of the stories; I always wondered how things went "behind the scenes" on an airplane at 35,000 feet
If you have any tips to share, please drop me a line.
